The chiefs of Moscow and St. Petersburg’s security departments were the figureheads of the state’s repressive apparatus in pre-revolutionary Russia. In this selection of memoirs, police and security heads give a thrilling insight into political investigation practices at the turn of the century, right up to the 1918 revolution. The key figures and events of the time are portrayed, including stories of the assassinations of Pleve, Sipiagin, Stolypin and Rasputin. Dispensing with the clichés and platitudes surrounding this subject in recent years, the authors give a true-to-life picture of political investigation in Russia, in which we see how the detective forces and their agents really operated. At the same time, the reader is provided with a kaleidoscope of political opinion, as each of the memoirists gives their own account of events.
