“And Earned Lots of Dollars…” is a parody of the parables and fables written by Lev Tolstoy in his attempt to educate the Russian people: the Russian Reading Books. Using the same artistic methods as his predecessor, Tuchkov paints an interesting picture of contemporary Russian law and morals, describing the relationship between the authorities and the people.
Many years went by. The people lacked moral guidance. After Tolstoy’s death, this was replaced by all manner of class slogans, political clichés and hot air. Lacking any new moral values, the population descended into total decadence and depravity. This sad fact is what prompted me, raznochinets Vladimir Tuchkov, to take up my pen and continue with the unfinished task of count Lev Tolstoy.
