The aim of this series, containing a number of rare and previously unpublished works, is to acquaint the modern reader with the rich heritage of Russian and Soviet literary critics. In compiling the series, we have given priority to little studied topics, such as the influence of Freud’s theories on literary criticism, or the Gothic novel in Russia, as well as to unconventional genres of literary criticism such as diaries and correspondence.
Each volume in the series contains an introduction, detailed commentary and name index.

The correspondence between these two eminent Russian literary critics, embracing three decades (1944-1954), is a glorious page in the history of Russian scholarship. The two correspondents, who were among the founding fathers of Soviet humanities, had both lived a dramatic lives. The letters alternate discussion of scholarly issues (remaining topical even today) with that of social and existential problems the intelligentsia had to face at the time. The commentary introduces a lot of new data pertaining both to the biography and the work of the two scholars.

Mstislav A. Tsyavlovsky, Tatiana G. Tsyavlovskaya (Zenger). With Pushkin in the LimelightMstislav A. Tsyavlovsky, Tatiana G. Tsyavlovskaya (Zenger). With Pushkin in the Limelight

The book is a peculiar specimen of Pushkin studies. It is a sort of research diary written by well-known scholars, Mstislav Tsyavlovsky and his wife, who had conducted it since the 1920s, jotting down all the events related to Pushkin, from genuine finds and discoveries to fakes and amusing incidents. Some mysterious entries of the 1920s–1940s are still awaiting clarification. The diary advances a lot of hypotheses and makes allusions to lost materials as well as paints wonderful pictures of eminent scholars of the time. This is the first complete edition of the diary checked against the original manuscript.

Vadim Vatsuro. The Gothic Novel in RussiaVadim Vatsuro. The Gothic Novel in Russia

In this, his last monograph, the eminent philologist V.E. Vatsuro (1935 - 2000) examines that fascinating phenomenon in eighteenth-century per-Romantic European literature – the Gothic novel. The author explores its impact on both readers and writers in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Russia, concentrating particularly on such gems as Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto, The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe and Lewis’s The Monk. A known expert in Russian culture in the times of Pushkin, the author discusses the first Russian translations of Gothic novels, the numerous adaptations and imitations, as well as the distinctive Gothic streak in the works of Karamzin, Zhukovsky, Pushkin, Bestuzhev-Marlinsky and other authors.
