This project aims to broaden traditionally held views on the boundaries and limits of culture, showing how the basic ingredients of everyday life such as domestic appliances, fashion, food, drink, smells and rituals of entertainment and relaxation serve as the bases of vital processes within our civilization, determining the direction of the future development of society. Each book in this series introduces a new and unique piece of contemporary research, re-examining the traditions of everyday life in a cultural context.

“Ice-cream for kids, flowers for chicks. Don’t mix it up!” The words of the immortal Lyolik from the movie “Brilliantovaya Ruka” are a great illustration of the significance of ice-cream in Soviet and post-Soviet culture. A number of researchers in the humanities are now studying the smells of various periods in history and attempting to create new academic disciplines such as historical aromatics or the grammar of aroma.
